Gault&Millau's review 2025

Welcome to a little journey through time! Today's Schafhof was built in 1446 deep in the eastern Odenwald by the monks of the Benedictine abbey of Amorbach and today houses a small hotel with sophisticated gastronomy. There is not much left of monastic abstinence in the "Abbot- und Schäferstube" or in the historic vaulted cellar, even if one or the other bottle of the spectacular wine selection would certainly have tasted good to the Benedictines. Whether you enjoy them in the 500-year-old cellar or in the parlour: they accompany a well-made, French-refined country house kitchen, whose ingredients come primarily, but not dogmatically, from the region, above all the own, aromatic lamb under the herb crust with melty potato gratin and bean vegetables with a good use of garlic. But also international dishes such as the truffled, juicy breast of Bresse chicken on black salsify mousseline and an intense Madeira jus succeed in the team around chef Achim Krutsch and patron Dominik Schmidt comme il faut.
