Gault&Millau's review 2025

The restaurant "Alte Liebe" is located a little away from the historic center in a quiet residential area. Inside, you dine stylishly next to raw concrete columns, outside casually at garden tables along the street in the shade of old trumpet trees. On Wednesdays and Thursdays there is bistro cuisine, on Fridays and Saturdays an extensive tasting menu, for which you should bring a lot of leisure due to somewhat excessive waiting times. Benjamin Mitschele, a well-known Augsburg restaurateur, is at the stove. One could describe his style as "kitchen of mindfulness", which refers to the origin of the products (vegetables from his own organic nursery!), but also their no-frills, balanced staging on the basis of French cuisine with its sauce culture: a full-bodied beurre blanc, for example, with the "10 Days Dry Aged" trout (gently slaughtered according to the Japanese Ike Jime method), a foam of white pepper with walnut hollandaise as a discreetly accentuating accompaniment to a confit zander or the hearty, oniony sauce bordelaise with Bavarian Wagyu beef. During our visit, an extremely buttery brioche feuilletée with a caramel crust consoled the somewhat directionless dessert as a sweet bouncer. Ambitious wine selection by sommelier Peter Karl, presented as eloquently as it is unobtrusively.
