Gault&Millau's review 2025

There are restaurants that live entirely from the esprit of the hosts. One such address is Christian's restaurant in Kirchdorf, Upper Bavaria, about fifty kilometers southeast of Munich, where Christiane Grainer takes care of her guests with down-to-earth charm. The ambience in the style of an overflowing antique shop (now a bit outdated) including a cuddly house hangover also contributes to the personal touch of the inn, which can look back on a history dating back to the 16th century. At the stove is Christian Grainer, a veteran of classic French cuisine. He has been playing in the gourmet league for a quarter of a century, which you can feel: impeccable standards, but only a small amount of new trends and ideas find their way into the surprise menu with three to six courses. During our visit, we were particularly pleased with the main course – rabbit with cauliflower – served as a finely aromatic fillet and as a ragout. The fact that you can still be served the Rammler, which is underestimated in Germany, is almost a sensation. Ditto the electronic wine list with around a thousand items that would do honor to a Parisian luxury restaurant.
