Gault&Millau's review 2025

The Josef Biffar winery has been run by the Japanese oenologist Fumiko Tokuoka for some time. Matching cuisine to the Palatinate Rieslings of the house is served in the historic hall of the winery at massive high tables by an exclusively Japanese team that puts together authentic dishes to create a kaiseki menu. You should not even express any change requests due to considerable language barriers (during our visit, the waitress spoke neither German nor English, and we did not speak Japanese), but what is served on the table is of selected good quality even without extras, such as the five-part Zensai appetizer with sea bass sashimi, sesame tofu, pork kakuni, tomato shiraae and paprika katsuo or a tempura shrimp in dashi essence and with Jurassic ear mushrooms, ginkgo nut and lotus root sensitively and finely tuned. Unfortunately, the meat of the duck breast salad was a bit firm to the bite, but the creamy miso with duck blood and glazed vegetables served with it was excellent. The most recent wine from the very cheap wine accompaniment of 35 euros dated 2014, and the great silence in the hall with pleasant breaks between the courses leads to an almost contemplative overall experience.
