Gault&Millau's review 2025

Waldenbuch is known for sweet delights at Ritter-Sport - and for a holistic gastronomic experience at the traditional Gasthof Krone. In summer on the terrace, otherwise around the tiled stove, the Krone radiates good hospitality from every pore. This is not least due to the original Swabian patron Matthias Gugeler, who gives every guest the feeling of being welcome from the heart. The heart also beats faster with the cuisine of Erik Metzger, who brings momentum to regional ingredients of the best provenance with still almost youthful verve. And he doesn't let himself be slouched: open for lunch and dinner, à la carte selection, a comprehensive vegetarian and the "Large Menu", which even in the three-course version lives up to its name thanks to amuses and greetings (the new option of the inexpensive For Friends menu on Wednesdays and Thursday evenings is also nice). However, it is worth bringing the time for twice the number of plates and enjoying impeccable truffled breast and leg of quail or confit halibut with refreshing ayran dashi. Finely arranged and in (attention!) quite filling portions is also the main course, a classic and yet independent variation of duck (roasted liver and juicy breast slice) thanks to side dishes borrowed from Arabic. But leave room for the cheese course, which was more convincing here in the form of truffled brie de meaux with sweet wine jelly than elsewhere a larger selection of cheeses, or one of the sweet desserts - you didn't come to Waldenbuch for low-carb food anyway. The wine list offers regional focuses, the wine accompaniment is knowledgeably and reliably composed by Matthias Gugeler. A country inn to feel good!
