Gault&Millau's review 2025

Even the reservation by phone was a pleasure: warm and open. And that's exactly how it went on site. The atmosphere is unpretentious and not aloof. We feel right at home. Under the direction of Steffen Mezger, a harmonious fusion of regional and international flavors is celebrated here in the middle of the barrenness of the Hohenlohe region, the fresh and predominantly regional ingredients are prepared with great attention to detail. The almost too lush amuse-bouche sets the mood for the expected menu in terms of taste and ensures a successful start: Jerusalem artichoke with braised veal heart in whipped egg yolk, grated dried beef heart on top. We sink into the small bowl. Then the first course of the menu: foie gras. This classic comes here with a freshness and so slightly spring-like that it is simply a great pleasure. A dry Pinot Gris from Franz Keller is drunk with it, which is the perfect complement with its lightness and finesse. The next course is also impressive: a tuna that presents itself in an intense and unaffected Asian way. The subtleties in detail and taste, such as the buttery lobster or the pre-dessert – an ice cream made of caramelized chocolate with miso – testify to the passion and perfection of the chef. The coconut crumble with pineapple and passion fruit, accompanied by a Beerenauslese from the Frey winery in the Palatinate, rounds off the menu with skilfully subtle differentiation.
