Meisenheim is worth a trip – the town prides itself on being the only German one in which there has not been a single destruction by war in 500 years. This may also be due to the fact that the place is located somewhere in the no man's land between Kaiserslautern, Bad Kreuznach and Idar-Oberstein. In the middle of it all is the Meisenheimer Hof, behind whose baroque portal are several beautiful parlours (including the fountain room with glazed, deep spring fountain in the middle of the room, "Zur Blume" with wall panelling from the 18th century) and a modern courtyard. You would hardly expect that in this location and in a classic village inn, the cooking is as ambitious as here by Markus Pape, who not only offers two menus, one of them vegetarian, each with 4-8 courses, but also has classics served à la carte, including some options such as a sole or fillet of Glantal beef in one piece for two or more people. So it can be unpretentious, with a perfect Wiener Schnitzel or beef cheeks in Bourguignonne sauce. Or refined as with a crème caramel of goose liver with cocoa, black salsify cream and foie gras ice cream or truffled sweetbreads with cauliflower variations in parsley espuma. Last but not least, the desserts are also entering creative territory, for example with variations of mango with Quatre Épices ice cream.
