Gault&Millau's review 2025

It's not easy to find "Michaels" in Leitenberg, a district of Frasdorf in Upper Bavaria's Chiemgau. If you're looking for an alpine ambience, you're out of place here, apart from the beautiful mountain panorama. Both the furnishings of the brightly panelled dining room and the style of chef Michael Schlaipfer are contemporary-international with Asian influences. The self-taught chef, who turned a village inn into a gourmet restaurant within ten years, works with his kitchen team at a high level of craftsmanship with impeccable products and the courage to create unusual combinations. For example, the home-pickled salmon trout was congenially accompanied by an intensely concentrated crustacean ice cream, while the perfectly glassy white halibut benefited twice from a distinctive ginger accent, once in the form of a slice of ginger gel, another time as a Thai-style sauce flavoured with galangal, a ginger-like plant. The stock flavored with tandoori spice was perhaps a little too close to the immensely tender veal fillet, similar to the lovage mirror of a fine mousse of pistachio and white chocolate along with terrific strawberry sorbet, which tastes like gummy bears. Professional and cordial service. Great homemade bread!
