Gault&Millau's review 2025

If it says Rutz on the label in Berlin, there is quality in it. This applies not only to the wine bar, but also to the Zollhaus, where a pleasant, uncomplicated, yet sophisticated inn cuisine generated from the best ingredients is served in the atmosphere of the aesthetic functional building from the beginning of the last century. No, the Zollhaus is not a second restaurant: it is something completely different. And just as successful in its own way. First of all, there is venison ham from the Schorfheide or venison salami from the hunter Korte, accompanied by baguette and butter. Small appetizers, such as grilled lettuce with omitted bacon in honey-tarragon vinaigrette, give an idea that the cooking here is not only with heart, but also with intellect and competence, but there are also simply classically wonderful dishes such as the Oldenburg oven duck with root puree or a fried Neukölln black pudding in pepper sauce with potato nut butter puree. Various pieces of pasture-raised beef or the Frisian heifer do not want to compete with the fine steak selection of the Grill Royal, for example, but are nevertheless of simply good quality. If you like, you can let the kitchen do it and get seven courses for a low price. Or you can let it go one better and pay ten euros more. In addition, there are – how could it be otherwise – excellent wines, including special bottlings such as the Rutz Rebellen.
