Gault&Millau's review 2025

Here, of all places, a little away from the river and centres and in a traditional-looking Bergisch building, is probably Wuppertal's best restaurant. One that lives not only from the dignified guest room and the large terrace, but also from the personal care of the omnipresent patron Serkan Akgün. In Wuppertal, he is still active elsewhere in the hotel and catering industry, but his passion seems to belong to the great cuisine and the great wines. On the drinks menu there are rows of mature bottles at very sympathetic prices. Without chef Alexander Hoppe, of course, the whole adventure would not be conceivable. The man can cook, that's for sure. But it is also certain that he knows exactly which products are currently in line with the trend of German top gastronomy. Char from the Birnbaum fish farm, for example, yuzu and Belper tuber, and Mara de Bois strawberries and shiso in the dessert. There is no saving on shopping here. The cheese comes - how could it be otherwise - from Bernard Antony, and at the beginning Sylt white bread is served. If you wanted to be angry, you could find it a little bit arbitrary. If you didn't want to be, you would say that everything was prepared with tremendous precision. From the knuty roll with chorizo cream in advance to the cleverly interpreted bee sting at the very end. The details - the Koshihikari rice with char or the grilled lettuce with caviar beurre blanc and excellent zander - are well worked out. We liked the Parmesan tortellini with artichokes, the aforementioned Belper tuber and vin jaune as well as the strawberry dessert with Opalys chocolate and shiso, but the qualitative differences to the other courses were tiny. Let's hope that all Wuppertal residents know what they have in this gem of Bergisch gastronomy.
