Gault&Millau's review 2025

Deep in the east, where the sun sets: meteorologically and geographically perhaps not quite correct, but that's exactly the place and the point where you have to be here: on the twelfth floor of the Hotel Vienna House in Berlin-Lichtenberg. There, where the city is no longer hip and no longer beautiful, the view of the TV tower and the sunset is still spectacular. But it's also worth taking a look in all other directions, even into the location itself – because it's extremely stylishly furnished in the style of the fifties. But if you don't come here for a romantic dinner, you should book one of the seats on the long windowsills. There, the view is accompanied by the warm service of Barbara Merll and the quite amazing wine list by Sharin Polte, whose westernmost drops are also located deep in the east, apart from a few German alibi bottles. If you want to discover wines from northern Poland to southern Georgia, this is the very first address, and there is also an elaborately self-created non-alcoholic accompaniment. But back to the kitchen, because it also has a lot to offer: Sascha Kurgan, who has already worked here as a sous chef for a while after stations at the Lorenz Adlon and the Vendôme, is now the chef in the kitchen and cooks much more complex than before. On his Voyage Culinaire, even the house classic onsen egg is expanded to include a mushroom dough with egg and ramen noodles, the crispy belly of the juvenile pig is supplemented by its braised cheeks in dim sum and flavored with truffles and bacon beans. As diverse as the ingredients, so precise is the preparation. So beautiful views all around.
