Gault&Millau's review 2025

If there were a Gault Millau award for the best social media account of a restaurant - the Troyka would be the sure winner. With unusual camera angles, a lot of wit and creativity, the Erkelenz team exudes the feeling of a team on Instagram that has immense fun doing what they do. Is it all just fake for the Internet? Think. In the modern, but not cold flat-roofed building, the upscale eaters mingle with those who choose the three-course bistro menu. They are united by the obvious joy of the creative creations from the open kitchen of Alexander Wulf and Marcel Kokot, which are served with the best of moods, a lot of knowledge and genuine interest in the guest by sommelier Ronny Schreiber and his team. The slight Russian touch of many dishes is independent, because Wulf was born in Siberia and grew up in Kazakhstan. An excellently grilled piece of sturgeon coated with an umami-strong varnish tastes like a bite into the local herb garden in okroshka, a herbaceous-wild summer soup. The Eastern influences are never exaggerated or strained, everything is light, modern, creative and informally new. Wulf and Kokot also master more classic courses at a high level, for example an Alsatian char with champagne cabbage and hazelnuts, an aroma combination that is more common, but rarely so harmonious. The menu does not have a single slump, even the greetings from the kitchen inspire. And visually? Every plate is a pleasure, for example variations of salt marsh lamb with two different sauces, which are formed into a yin-yang picture. The excellent wine advice fits in with this, the cellar has 720 bottles, ranging from classic Riesling with good vintage depth to Georgian amphora wine, and a non-alcoholic accompaniment with homemade drinks is also offered. Some things on the social web may give the wrong impression - but an evening at Troyka is actually as much fun as it seems on Instagram.
