Gault&Millau's review 2025

The ambience is historic-rustic like a knight's hall: dark coffered ceiling, historic tapestries, leaded glass windows, crystal chandeliers, elegantly laid tables. The defensive tower from 1070 still houses the gastronomy established in 1912. So it's made for tourists who flock to Eisenach. But the restaurant is also popular with locals, and this is due to the cuisine of Ulrich Rösch, who cooks by no means old-fashioned. The plates are colourful and fresh, whether it's the saddle of hare in the bread crust with bright pumpkin puree, Brussels sprouts and tuber jelly or the sea buckthorn and elderberry dessert. The monkfish is served with beetroot risotto, and crunchy blanched vegetables go with the good steaks from different provenances. The desserts such as truffled, melted Brie de Meaux in a crêpe shell or the chocolate quince tart with sloe ice cream are very good. The wine list is not lavish, but well curated.
